Tell us about your background, including your upbringing, education, and any significant experiences that have shaped your thinking?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and grew up in a faith-filled home. My parents prioritized creating a godly atmosphere for us, and that influenced my upbringing. I attended missionary-based schools throughout my academic journey, from primary to secondary school and university.
Education has played a crucial role in shaping my thinking, and my experiences have been rooted in those educational institutions. I am also Igbo, which is an ethnic group in Nigeria.
Speaking of education, could you tell us about your university experience? Where did you study, what did you major in, and how was your overall experience at the university?
I studied chemical engineering at Covenant University from 2016 to 2021. I had a great time during my university years, to say the least. Covenant University was more than just an educational institution for me. It was like a crucible or a refiner’s fire that shaped my values and mindset. It taught me the importance of having a strong foundation and instilled a possibility mentality in me.
The graduates and even those who were associated with the university share this mindset of limitless possibilities, which is not often seen in the Nigerian space. Overall, my experience at Covenant University was transformative.
At what point did you realize that you wanted to pursue entrepreneurship? Can you share your first foray into entrepreneurship and how it all began?
I’ve always had a sense that traditional job roles were not my fit, despite the academic achievements and analytical intelligence associated with them. Initially, I thought my passion might lie in football or music. However, during my time at Covenant University, I realized that my sense of style and how I dressed caught people’s attention. They started approaching me, asking where they could get similar clothing items. That was the first time I made money from what I’m doing now.
It opened my eyes to the value I could provide, and through recommendations, I started attracting more customers. This was the beginning of my journey as an entrepreneur, even though it didn’t happen overnight. It was a gradual realization of the business potential in what I was already passionate about.
As you embarked on this journey, what were some of the challenges you faced in terms of securing initial capital, finding partners, and bringing your ideas to life?
Joseph: Securing initial capital was a challenge, and it made me realize that I couldn’t rely solely on my own resources. However, during my university years, a few people had already approached me, expressing their interest in investing in my venture. So, after completing my studies and realizing that this was the right path for me, I knew I needed a partner who shared my values and vision.
I went back to those individuals who had expressed interest and evaluated each potential partner carefully. It was essential for me to find someone who understood the value-driven nature of the business, rather than solely focusing on financial gains. Eventually, I found the perfect partner who aligned with my values, and that has made a significant difference in building the brand.
Throughout this journey, what has been your favourite aspect of building your brand from the ground
From the ground up, my favourite aspect of building the brand has been the opportunity to connect with people on a deeper level and make a positive impact in their lives. Fashion is often seen as a superficial industry, but I wanted to change that narrative. Through my brand, I aim to empower individuals, boost their confidence, and inspire them to express their true selves through their clothing choices.
Seeing customers transform and gain a newfound sense of self-assurance when they wear our designs brings me immense joy. It’s incredibly fulfilling to receive messages from people who have been positively impacted by our brand, sharing stories of how it has helped them embrace their uniqueness and feel more confident in their own skin. These moments make all the hard work and challenge worthwhile.
Additionally, I love the creative process of designing and bringing ideas to life. From conceptualizing a collection to selecting fabrics, colours, and patterns, every step is an opportunity for artistic expression. It allows me to infuse my personal style and vision into each piece, creating a cohesive brand identity that resonates with our target audience.
What are your future aspirations and goals as your brand continues to grow? Where do you see yourself and your brand in the next few years?
In the next few years, I envision my brand expanding its reach both nationally and internationally. I aim to establish flagship stores in major cities, create strategic partnerships with other like-minded brands, and participate in renowned fashion events and collaborations. I want my brand to become synonymous with quality, innovation, and authenticity.
Beyond the fashion industry, I also aspire to leverage my platform and success to contribute to philanthropic endeavours. I firmly believe in giving back to society and supporting causes that align with our values. Whether it’s through charitable initiatives, supporting local artisans and craftsmen, or promoting sustainability and ethical practices in the fashion industry, I want my brand to be a force for positive change.
On a personal level, I strive to continue learning and evolving as an entrepreneur and creative. I want to surround myself with talented individuals who can bring fresh perspectives and skills to the brand, fostering a collaborative and dynamic work environment.
