From Numbers to Narratives: Rick Aqua’s Journey from Accounting to Tech Content Creation

Updated on May 13, 2025

How does someone go from crunching numbers to creating tech content that resonates with thousands?

We sat down with Rick Aqua, a Ghanaian creator who has successfully transitioned from a career in accounting to becoming one of the most insightful voices in Africa’s tech creator ecosystem. In this interview, Rick opens up about navigating career shifts, building digital influence, and staying grounded in purpose.

The Beginning: Choosing Accounting

Rick’s journey began on a traditional path. He studied accounting and, like many, aimed to secure a stable job with clear professional growth.

“Accounting felt like a smart, practical choice. I was good with numbers and it gave me structure. But deep down, I always knew I had a creative side.”

The Shift: From Spreadsheets to Storytelling

While working in accounting, Rick began experimenting with content. His curiosity in tech and finance met a natural storytelling ability, and that intersection sparked something new.

“I started creating content about the tools I used and what I was learning. The more I shared, the more people responded. That’s when I realized — this could be more than a hobby.”

What started as casual posts soon turned into a consistent content journey that would open doors to a new career.

Leaning Into Tech: Building a Niche

Rick found his sweet spot by merging his finance background with a growing interest in African tech, productivity tools, and digital innovation.

“I wasn’t trying to go viral — I was trying to be helpful. And that’s what built trust. I did have a viral moment that made me almost 1,000 followers per day, it felt good to be seen and that video was a simple iPhone tutorial I had helped a friend out with and it caused a buzz, it was in that moment of over 3million+ impressions that I knew people cared about valuable content ”

His audience grew steadily, made up of curious professionals, creators, and startups looking for clear, relatable content on tools, workflows, and creator economy trends.

Challenges: Navigating Uncertainty

Of course, pivoting careers isn’t without challenges.

“The hardest part was explaining the shift to people who didn’t get it. Especially when content creation wasn’t yet mainstream as a career. There is an unspoken rule that people have with respect to typical white collar jobs. Most people just did not get it”

Rick also shared how he managed imposter syndrome, inconsistent income at the start, and balancing creative freedom with brand expectations.

Key Wins: Community and Brand Collaborations

Over time, Rick’s consistency paid off. From brand partnerships to speaking opportunities, his influence expanded beyond content — becoming a thought leader in the tech creator space.

“One of my proudest moments was working on a campaign that highlighted African creators using tech to solve real problems. It felt aligned with my values.”

Lessons Learned:

When asked what he’s learned from his transition, Rick offered these reflections:

  • “Start before you’re ready — clarity comes with action.”
  • “Don’t chase trends, build a niche.”
  • “Treat content like a business — systems, contracts, and boundaries matter.”

What’s Next for Rick Aqua?

Rick is now exploring creative consulting, digital education, and collaborative projects across Africa’s creator economy.

“I’m excited about building more community-focused platforms — not just creating, but helping other creators scale their value too.”

Final Words: Advice to Aspiring Creators

“You don’t have to quit your 9–5 immediately. Start where you are, document your learning, and find your rhythm. The internet rewards consistency and clarity.”
