How to Receive ACH Payments in Africa

Getting paid by a US client should not require expensive international wire transfers, complicated banking instructions, or an unnecessary trip to the United States.

For freelancers, remote workers, creators, consultants, exporters, and online business owners across Africa, ACH is often one of the easiest ways to receive payments from American companies. The challenge is that ACH payments normally require US banking details.

Accrue offers a simpler route. With an Accrue dollar account, eligible users can receive ACH payments using US banking details and withdraw their money through supported local payment methods.

This guide explains how to receive ACH payments in Africa, how the process works, why ACH may be more convenient than an international wire, and what you should check before sharing your payment details with a client.

What Is an ACH Payment?

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House. It is the electronic payment network used to move money between bank and credit-union accounts in the United States.

American businesses use the ACH Network for:

  • Employee salaries and direct deposits
  • Freelancer and contractor payments
  • Business-to-business transactions
  • Recurring subscriptions
  • Tax refunds
  • Bill payments
  • Transfers between bank accounts
NACHA, the organisation that governs the ACH Network, describes it as a system that reaches US bank and credit-union accounts and supports both Direct Deposit and Direct Payment transactions. From the sender’s perspective, making an ACH payment can feel like completing a normal domestic bank transfer. They typically enter the recipient’s account number, routing number, account type, name, and any required payment reference.

Why Receiving ACH Payments Can Be Difficult in Africa

The ACH Network is primarily built around the US banking system. As a result, an African bank account will not normally come with the US routing and account numbers that an American employer or payment platform requests.

Without suitable US payment details, African professionals may have to rely on alternatives such as international wire transfers.

Wire transfers can still be useful, particularly for certain large or urgent transactions, but they may involve:

  • Higher sender or recipient charges
  • Correspondent or intermediary bank fees
  • More complicated payment instructions
  • SWIFT details
  • Longer processing chains
  • Automatic currency conversion in some cases
  • Less predictable final amounts
This creates friction for both parties. The client may prefer a familiar US payment method, while the recipient wants an affordable way to receive and manage dollar earnings. A USD account that supports ACH payments can help close that gap.

How to Receive ACH Payments with Accrue

1. Download Accrue and create an account

Start by downloading the Accrue app and registering with your correct personal information.

Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your identification document. A mismatch between your profile name, identity document, client invoice, and payment instructions could delay verification or create payment problems.

2. Complete identity verification

Financial platforms must verify their customers to comply with identity, fraud-prevention, and financial regulations.

Complete the requested verification process and submit clear, valid documents. Depending on your country and account type, you may be asked for information such as:

  • A government-issued identity document
  • A selfie or facial verification
  • Your residential address
  • Your date of birth
  • Additional information about your payment activity
The exact requirements may vary by user, location, regulation, and product availability.

3. Open your Accrue USD account

After completing the required checks, select the option to receive USD and follow the instructions for opening your account.

Complete the setup process by selecting “Receive USD” and completing KYC

Once activated, review all the payment information displayed in the app. This may include details such as:

  • Account holder or beneficiary name
  • Account number
  • Routing number
  • Bank or payment-partner name
  • Supported transfer method
  • Payment references or special instructions
Do not guess any missing information. Copy the details directly from your account.

4. Send the ACH details to your client

Provide the client with only the information required to complete the payment.

A simple payment instruction could read:

Please send the payment via ACH using the US banking details below. Ensure that the beneficiary name and payment reference are entered exactly as provided.

You can then include the account name, routing number, account number, account type, and invoice reference shown in your Accrue account.

Never share your Accrue password, verification code, card PIN, or other login credentials. A legitimate payer only needs the approved payment details required to initiate the transfer.

5. Ask the client to select ACH

Some companies offer several payout methods, including ACH, domestic wire, international wire, cheque, and card payments.

Ask the payer to choose ACH, Direct Deposit, or US bank transfer, depending on the wording used by their bank or payment platform.

The sender should also confirm whether the payment is being made as an ACH credit and whether the receiving account supports the transaction type.

6. Wait for the payment to be processed

Standard ACH payments commonly settle according to the processing schedule chosen by the sender. NACHA explains that ACH transactions can move in as little as a few hours through Same Day ACH or in one to two banking days under standard processing arrangements.

However, the time before a payment becomes available in your Accrue balance may also depend on:

  • When the sender submitted it
  • Weekends or US banking holidays
  • The sending bank’s processing schedule
  • Compliance reviews
  • Incorrect payment information
  • The type of ACH transaction
  • Accrue or its payment partner’s processing rules
Plan around business days rather than assuming every payment will arrive immediately.

7. Withdraw or use your USD balance

After the funds arrive, follow the available instructions in the app to withdraw through a supported local channel.

Users can withdraw USD to supported bank or mobile-money accounts. Before converting or withdrawing, review:

  • The current exchange rate
  • The withdrawal fee
  • The minimum and maximum transaction amounts
  • The estimated delivery time
  • The destination account details
  • Any country-specific restrictions
Rates and fees can change, so the amount shown in the app at the time of the transaction should be treated as the current quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive ACH payments in Africa?

Yes. Eligible users can receive ACH payments through a financial platform that provides supported US payment details. Availability depends on your country, identity verification, account type, provider terms, and the origin of the payment.

Can I receive ACH payments with Accrue?

Accrue states that users can send and receive ACH payments through its USD account. Users should check the app for current eligibility, fees, limits, and supported payment sources.

Do I need to live in the United States?

You do not necessarily need to live in the US to apply for an eligible Accrue USD account. You must, however, complete the required verification process and live in a supported country.

Do I need a Social Security Number?

Requirements depend on the provider, account structure, location, and compliance process. Follow the identification instructions shown during your Accrue application rather than assuming that one specific document is always required.

How long does an ACH payment take?

ACH settlement can occur on the same banking day or over one to two banking days, depending on the sender’s selection and processing schedule. Additional provider reviews may affect when the funds become available.

Can a client pay me through payroll?

Potentially. The employer or payroll provider must support the supplied account details, and the account must permit that type of incoming payment. Confirm compatibility before using the account for salary payments.

Is ACH cheaper than SWIFT?

ACH is often a low-cost payment method within the US banking system, but the total cost to an African recipient depends on the sending bank, receiving platform, conversion rate, and withdrawal method. Compare the complete transaction cost instead of looking at only one advertised fee.

Can I keep the payment in dollars?

This depends on the current features of your USD account. Review the available balance, conversion, spending, transfer, and withdrawal options inside the app.

Which African countries does Accrue support?

Accrue advertises cross-border payment services in multiple African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, and others. Country availability and individual features may change, so confirm support during registration.
